Elected Officials Send Letter to Governor to Address Availability, Racial Equity Issues with Vaccines

Two groups of local elected officials have written to Gov. Larry Hogan (R) urging him to address availability and racial equity issues with the COVID-19 vaccines in Montgomery County. All nine County Council members signed on to a letter sent Wednesday asking the governor to specifically address racial inequity in both the vaccine distribution and the pre-registration system.

As a Maryland resident, I am happy to share that the African American Health Program is hosting free COVID-19 testing sites in Montgomery County,” Brown says in the PSA.

Silver Branch Brewing to Mark Second Anniversary This Week

Silver Branch Brewing Company will mark its second anniversary with a five-day series of events beginning tomorrow, March 3, the Silver Spring brewery announced. The first event Wednesday will be the release of “a bigger and bolder version” of Sisyphus, the first beer the brewery released when it opened in 2019.

Recreation Department to Reopen Eight Centers on Limited Schedule

The county’s Recreation department plans to reopen eight community recreation centers for limited, scheduled activities on Monday, March 1, officials announced. Individuals or households will be able to schedule a time to use the fitness room, gymnasiums, and other rooms without attending a class, as was necessary when the department opened RecFit programs two weeks ago.

Timebank’s Skill Share Presentations Go Virtual This Year

The fifth annual Skill Share presentations from the Silver Spring Timebank will be held virtually this year on Sunday, Feb. 25 from 1:45–4:30 p.m., the group has announced. The free event offers participants the opportunity to learn from other residents, all Timebank members, new skills or other relevant information. Since it is held in Zoom and the SSTB Facebook page this year, anyone can join from anywhere.

Silver Spring-Based Urban One Bidding to Build Casino/Resort in Richmond

Silver Spring-based Urban One, a multimedia entertainment and information company, is in the bidding to run a very different type of property—a casino/resort in Richmond, Va. Urban One CEO Alfred Liggins, accompanied by local leaders, announced plans Tuesday for a proposed ONE Casino and Resort, a $517 million gaming, dining and entertainment venue on the south side of town, according to WRIC-TV in Richmond.
