County Commission for Women Seeks Entries for Girl Power Contest

The county’s Commission for Women is looking for entries in its fourth annual Girl Power Contest, organizers announced.

The contest, in recognition of Women’s History Month, is open to any county resident aged five and older and should address the following question (quoting the announcement):

  • “History has been made with the United States electing its first ever female Vice President. If you had the opportunity, what advice would you give her? And what three important issues should she consider addressing while in office?”

“Entries typically are short stories, poems, and drawings; but creativity is encouraged, and alternative creative expressive submissions are welcomed,” according to a press release. “Entries will be judged on creativity and content; entrants should refrain from using vulgarities and racist or sexist comments or images.”

Winners will be chosen in four categories—elementary school, middle school, high school and adult. All winners will be featured in the commission’s social media and receive a swag bag.

Submissions will be accepted beginning Monday, March 1 through March 31 and should include full name, age, grade and school if applicable, phone number and email address.

A parent or guardian must give written permission in the case of a minor’s entry, which must be their own work. Written entries should be limited to no more than 500 words.

More information and to submit entries electronically (preferred) is available online. Entries also can be submitted via email at or mailed to:
