Committees of the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board will get an update on Thrive Montgomery at a public meeting on Monday, while United Therapeutics hosts the county’s town hall on climate action next Thursday evening.

Tuskegee Airman Charles McGee Brings Stories, Advice to Silver Spring

The last two months have been a whirlwind for retired Army Brig. Gen. Charles E. McGee of Bethesda, who turned 100 in December, participated in the coin toss at Super Bowl LIV in Miami, received an official promotion to general and was honored by President Donald Trump—along with his great-grandson Iain Lanphier—during the State of the Union address.

Saturday is your chance to meet a young kangaroo or wallaby at the Silver Spring Library. There’s also a record fair and later that day, a comedy show at Silver Branch Brewing Co. Presentations on microplastics in the Chesapeake and synthetic turf will be offered on Tuesday, while on Wednesday, the Long Branch Library hosts a talk on the local Underground Railroad.

County Library Looking for Acts for Vinyl Day Contest

The county’s library system is looking for acts to enter the “Make Music Montgomery” contest that will take place during the Just for the Record—A Vinyl Day event on Saturday, April 18 at the Silver Spring Library. Acts can audition live or submit a recording. Each entry must include a live musical performance, though elements such as dance can be included.

This will be a great week for music lovers with live music three nights this weekend at the American Legion, a guitar concert tomorrow in Takoma Park, a symphony at Montgomery College, a master class and concert at Levine Music and a Valentine’s Day show at Carroll Café. There’s also comedy coming to Takoma Park, an event marking 100 years since women won the right to vote, and more.

Takoma Park’s Mid-Winter Folk Fest highlights the upcoming weekend. There are opening receptions this week for art exhibits at CREATE Arts Center and Locavino Café, as well as several events marking the beginning of Black History Month.

Timebank Members Hold Skill Share Event Downtown

The Silver Spring Timebank hosted its 4th annual Skill Share event on Sunday, Jan. 19 at the Silver Spring Civic Building on Veterans Plaza. The event ran from 1–3 p.m. and attracted a crowd of curious individuals looking to learn something new for 2020.

Kicking off the last week of January is the Friday blues happy hour at the American Legion, which will then host comedy on Saturday. Also on Saturday, poetry fans can attend a dinner and reading of Robert Burns’ work at Silver Branch Brewing Co. The Takoma VFW will feature gypsy jazz on Monday night. Close out January with a chamber music concert at Seekers Church next Friday night.
