County Library Looking for Acts for Vinyl Day Contest

The county’s library system is looking for acts to enter the “Make Music Montgomery” contest that will take place during the Just for the Record—A Vinyl Day event on Saturday, April 18 at the Silver Spring Library. Acts can audition live or submit a recording. Each entry must include a live musical performance, though elements such as dance can be included.

This will be a great week for music lovers with live music three nights this weekend at the American Legion, a guitar concert tomorrow in Takoma Park, a symphony at Montgomery College, a master class and concert at Levine Music and a Valentine’s Day show at Carroll Café. There’s also comedy coming to Takoma Park, an event marking 100 years since women won the right to vote, and more.

The annual county Thanksgiving parade on Saturday highlights the week leading up to the holiday. The night before, join the D.C. Blues Society at the 4th Friday happy hour at the American Legion, which hosts a comedy show the next night. AstroLab Brewing will sponsor a holiday craft market on Sunday. On Monday, residents interested in pedestrian safety in Silver Spring are invited to attend a briefing on the issue. The final Crossroads farmers market of the season on Wednesday will include holiday-themed music and fun, with lunch featuring Takoma Park Mayor Kate Stewart.

Live Garra Theatre presents opening night of Sartre’s “No Exit” on Friday, while comedian Irene Tu performs the same night at Montgomery College in the Cultural Arts Center. Friends of the Library will be collecting used books on Saturday at the Silver Spring Library. On Sunday, Azalea City Recordings plans a record release party featuring songs from local musicians. Area singers will have two chances to participate in community sings this week, one on Wednesday and one Thursday evening.

Halloween is Thursday, one week from today, and there are numerous event planned over the next week to celebrate (including the annual Zombie Walk). If your favorite venue isn’t listed, check directly with them. In the meantime, there’s an adoption event with the Humane Rescue Alliance at the Go Brent offices on Saturday, which is also Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Manna Food Center will sponsor a rescued food cooking contest at Sunday’s Farmers Market in Silver Spring, and the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood will hold a beer crawl at the Silver Spring breweries. The inaugural induction ceremony for the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night highlights this week’s events. On Saturday, the usual second Saturday of live music at the American Legion will be expanded into an end-of-summer bash featuring eight local bands and extended hours. The same night, also at the legion’s hall, the DC Blues Society will hold its annual showdown. There will be a climate town hall and a street art festival on Saturday, Future Fest is set for Sunday, and a community meeting will be held Monday to present plans for the renovation of Downtown Silver Spring.

The Takoma Park Folk Festival on Sunday highlights this week’s events. The American Legion will host local bands on both Friday and Saturday nights, while Sligo Creek Golf Course continues to offer live music on Friday nights, and there’s a comedy show set for Saturday night at the Silver Spring Black Box Theatre. Elsewhere, Levine Music will host a screening of excerpts from Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary about country music on Tuesday evening.

As summer winds down, the highlight of this week’s events is Saturday’s jazz festival in Silver Spring. Music lovers can also find live bands at Sligo Creek Golf Course tomorrow and next Friday, a blues happy hour the same night at the American Legion, a blues open mic on Tuesday and a Cajun jam Wednesday, both at the Takoma Park VFW. This weekend, there’s the annual tomato tasting contest at the Silver Spring Farmers Market, Grace Episcopal Church’s annual pig roast, and a comedy show Saturday night at the American Legion.
