One perfect weather day. Two stages. Seven performing groups. Seven hours of music. And several thousand fans. Grammy-winning Arturo Sandoval headlined the annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival Sunday. He showed he’s a multi-instrumental master and a great entertainer as well.

As summer winds down, the highlight of this week’s events is Saturday’s jazz festival in Silver Spring. Music lovers can also find live bands at Sligo Creek Golf Course tomorrow and next Friday, a blues happy hour the same night at the American Legion, a blues open mic on Tuesday and a Cajun jam Wednesday, both at the Takoma Park VFW. This weekend, there’s the annual tomato tasting contest at the Silver Spring Farmers Market, Grace Episcopal Church’s annual pig roast, and a comedy show Saturday night at the American Legion.

Workshop Scheduled for Aspiring Comedians

Aspiring comedians can learn how to hone their routines during a workshop sponsored by Improbable Comedy, according to an announcement from producer Kim Levone. Standup comedian Sara Armour, who started in the business in Washington, D.C. in 2011, will lead the three-hour workshop. The workshop will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Cissel-Saxon American Legion Post 41 at 905 Sligo Ave.

This week, residents can have lunch tomorrow with Takoma Park Mayor Kate Stewart. Live music continues on Friday nights at Sligo Creek Golf Course, along with the DC Blues Society Happy Hour on Aug. 23. “The Little Mermaid” is showing on Sonny’s Green tomorrow night, the grand opening of a public piano in Takoma Park on Sunday, and there’s a discussion of death and dying issues at the Silver Spring Library on Wednesday.

County Announces Lineup, Schedule for Jazz Festival

The county has announced the full lineup and schedule for the 16th annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival. The free festival will be held from 3-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 on Veterans Plaza. Grammy-award winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will headline this year’s performances.

Revels Seeking Children, Teens for Holiday Performance

Washington Revels is now scheduling appointments with children and teenagers who are interested in auditioning for 2019’s The Christmas Revels. The group is looking for children entering grades 3-5 and teens entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2019 for the production of “Celestial Fools.” The production is scheduled for Dec. 7-15 in Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University.

Sandoval to Headline Silver Spring Jazz Festival

Grammy-award winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will headline the 16th annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival, according to an announcement from the Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District. The free festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 from 3-10 p.m. on two stages, with performances by festival cofounder Marcus Johnson, The Eric Byrd Trio, Paul Carr and The Real Jazz Ambassadors, and others.
