Shop Takoma e-Gift Card Now Available for Holiday Shoppers

Holiday shoppers and gift givers now can buy the Shop Takoma e-Gift Card for use at area businesses, according to an announcement from Main Street Takoma. The e-cards are currently accepted at more than 20 restaurants, shops and service businesses in Takoma Park and the Takoma neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

County Police Make DUI, Handgun Arrests in Takoma Park Area

A county police officer with the Holiday Task Force stopped three men on Nov. 29 after a traffic violation in the Takoma Park area who were then charged with offenses including driving under the influence and handgun possession. The officer observed the incident in the area of University Boulevard East and Merrimac Drive.

Detectives Seek Help Identifying Suspects in Ellsworth Place Robbery

Detectives with the county police department’s 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating the robbery of two people in Ellsworth Place and are asking for help to identify the suspects. The incident occurred at about 1:45 p.m. on Dec. 1 and the victims were a male and a female. Both suspects are male and the department has released surveillance video of the two in hopes someone can assist with identification.

Great Shoals Winery Will Close, Be Replaced by Bubble Tea Shop

Great Shoals Winery Tasting Room, which opened in Takoma Park in 2018, will close at the end of the year and the space taken over by a shop featuring bubble tea, according to an announcement from Main Street Takoma. Leandra Nichola, a longtime Takoma Park resident, will open Main Street Pearl at 7050 Carroll Ave. serving bubble tea and other “bubble” drinks including beer, wine, cider, kombucha and scratch soda.

Detectives Seek Help to Identify Bank Robbery Suspect

Detectives from the county police’s Major Crimes Division have released surveillance video of a suspect in a recent bank robbery and are seeking help to identify him. The robbery occurred at about 1:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the TD Bank branch located at 8661 Colesville Rd. in Silver Spring.

Hucker Elected President of County Council

Councilmember Tom Hucker (D-District 5) was unanimously elected to a one-year term as council president yesterday. Hucker had served a term as vice president. Traditionally, the vice president is elected to the presidency following his or her term. Councilmember Gabe Albornoz (D-At Large), elected in 2018 and chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, was elected vice president.

Mrs. K’s Restaurant Now Offered for Lease to New Operator

Mrs. K’s Restaurant and Barrel Bar, a Silver Spring institution for 90 years, is now being offered for lease. “The owners want to take the time to find the right operator to take it to the next level,” said the leasing agent, who asked to remain anonymous. The Mrs. K’s name may or may not live on, he said, depending on what that operator decides to do.
