Tom Perez Mulling Maryland Governor Bid: Report

Former Democratic National Committee chair and former Montgomery County Councilman Tom Perez is considering a run for Maryland governor in 2022, according to a report from Politico.

“I live here in Maryland,” Mr. Perez, of Takoma Park, told Bill Press in an episode of Press’ show, “The Bill Press Pod,” which was released Tuesday morning. “Our current incumbent [governor] is term-limited. [I’m] taking a look at that; we’ll see what happens.”

Politico reports that the Democratic field for governor in Maryland remains unsettled. “On the Democratic side, longtime state Comptroller Peter Franchot has already announced he is running, with a field of as many as a dozen other Democrats mentioned as potential candidates.”

The MoCo Show’s Prayag Gordy reported earlier this month that Mr. Franchot, also of Takoma Park, announced his plans to run for governor. “In his first campaign video, Franchot says he will focus on rebuilding the economy, healthcare, housing, education, justice, and infrastructure. He describes himself as a “fiscal watchdog and a careful steward of our state’s finances” and promises to “fix every pothole” in his first six months in office.”

Incumbent Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is unable to run again in 2022, due to term limits set forth by Maryland law. Gov. Hogan has been considering a presidential run, according to several reports.
