Washington Revels is now scheduling appointments with children and teenagers who are interested in auditioning for 2019’s The Christmas Revels. The group is looking for children entering grades 3-5 and teens entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2019 for the production of “Celestial Fools.” The production is scheduled for Dec. 7-15 in Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University.
As the summer winds down and peak vacation season is here, community-oriented events slow down, too. This week features live music at the Sligo Creek Golf Course on Friday nights, a pop-up nursery at Astro Lab Brewing, an international food & craft fair on Veterans Plaza, and a bingo benefit at Denizens Brewing Co.
Highlights this week include live music on Friday nights at the Sligo Creek Golf Course, a group of garage rock bands at the American Legion, followed the next day by a blues jam at the legion, a family science night at the library, and a Wednesday evening community forum on eliminating hate and violence in the county.
Grammy-award winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will headline the 16th annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival, according to an announcement from the Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District. The free festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 from 3-10 p.m. on two stages, with performances by festival cofounder Marcus Johnson, The Eric Byrd Trio, Paul Carr and The Real Jazz Ambassadors, and others.
Highlights for the coming week include live music at Sligo Creek Golf Course and Cissel-Saxon American Legion Post 41, a comedy show at the Legion, free riding lessons on an e-Scooter, Beacon Market, a Yappy Hour for your pup in Takoma Park, and opening night of an Agatha Christie play at The Highwood Theatre.

Montgomery County will again offer matching grants of up to $1,000 to help fund neighborhood events, according to an announcement from Silver Spring Regional Services Center Director Reemberto Rodriguez. Neighborhood organizations, block groups, tenant groups, civic groups and similar organizations are eligible to apply to help fund events and activities that “promote community engagement, encourage capacity building, networking and stimulate the local economy.”
The Silver Spring Jazz Festival will go on this summer after all, thanks largely to community feedback in reaction to a Source story about its apparent demise in favor of a series of smaller events. The festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 and the list of performers will be released in a few weeks. In the meantime, the Thursday Summer Concert Series is back next week.
This week’s events feature the Silver Spring Blues Festival on Saturday, the return of the Silver Spring Summer Concert Series, a Pepco community meeting, two opportunities for community sings, and baseball with the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts.
