Underground Pizza Company to Close Downtown Silver Spring Location on June 3

Underground Pizza Company will permanently close its downtown Silver Spring location on Monday, June 3.

An announcement posted on the restaurant’s Instagram account on Thursday evening said that its lease was ending, and UPC “felt it was time to move on from our Georgia Avenue location.”

Underground Pizza Company opened in 2022 at the former location of Olazzo at 8235 Georgia Ave., next to Crown Beer & Wine. Olazzo closed in 2021 after 15 years of operation, with UPC taking over the remainder of its lease.

Concert promoter Evan Weinstein founded UPC in 2020 when local concert venues had to close due to the pandemic. Weinstein, who also owns Steez Promo, began selling Detroit-style pizzas at local pop-up events, using social media for marketing, and quickly building a loyal customer base.

Following the success of these local pop-up events, UPC first opened at Power Plant Live! in Baltimore in 2020 and downtown Silver Spring and Towson in 2022. It was later named one of Eater’s “7 Exciting New Pizza Places to Try Around D.C.

UPC opened a ghost kitchen at Sports & Social at 1314 U St. NW in the District earlier this year, according to The MoCo Show.
