Crown Beer & Wine to Take Over Former Crown Wigs Location in Downtown Silver Spring

Crown Beer & Wine is set to open in the former home of Crown Wigs at 8233 Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring.

Last month, the county’s Board of License Commissioners approved the store’s off-site beer and wine sales license. According to Robert Dyer, this license only permits the sale of sealed containers of alcoholic beverages that cannot be consumed on-site.

Crown Wigs closed in July 2022 after operating at its downtown Silver Spring location since 1968; The W Group of Laurel placed the building on the market for $1 million in March of the same year.

Hannah McCann, who leads the commercial realty practice at GoBrent Realty, told the Source in 2022 that the $1 million price tag was essentially the same as the price the building was listed for — $999,900 — during four months in 2006-07 before it was pulled from the market.

“Here we are 15 years later, and it’s back on the market for $100 more,” McCann said.

The 1,344-square-foot, one-story building was built in 1927 and was assessed at $441,700 when it was placed on the market before Crown Wigs closed in 2022. The property is in a designated opportunity zone, making it eligible for federal tax incentives.

An opening date for Crown Beer & Wine has yet to be announced.
