Mandalay to Host Grand Reopening Celebration

Mandalay Restaurant & Café will host a grand reopening celebration on August 13 & 14, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

The restaurant will host a lunch seating at 12 p.m. & a dinner seating at 6 p.m. on both days, according to the announcement. A buffet will be served, and indoor and outdoor seating will be available. The cost is $30 per person, and reservations are not required. The restaurant will also be open for takeout, and delivery is available via Uber Eats.

Mandalay reopened on July 15 at its former location at 930 Bonifant St. after plans for a new restaurant — Valenciana Wine Garden — to take over the space fell through. Washingtonian reported in June that owner Kyaw “Joe” Myint said he was able to negotiate a new two-year lease with the landlord and planned to re-debut with carryout and delivery only in July.

The Myint family closed Mandalay’s Bonifant St. location last October, ending a 17-year-run in downtown Silver Spring. The restaurant originally opened in College Park in 2000, then moved to Silver Spring in 2004, according to Washingtonian. In December of 2019, the Myints announced their intention to move in August 2020 to a location in Washington D.C. near the former Walter Reed complex at 7302 Georgia Ave. N.W. The Bonifant Street location’s closure was then delayed to the middle of 2021. “That is still the plan,” manager Joe Myint said of the move last year, noting that the family had purchased that building.

The Myints posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page in February that it was considering reopening, asking for public comment. After an avalanche of over 400 Facebook comments, phone calls, and emails, the Myints announced in June that it would reopen at its former location in downtown Silver Spring.

The Myint family also operates Bandoola Bowl, a quick-service concept with some of Mandalay’s dishes on its menu. A second Bandoola Bowl location opened as part of the second phase of the Western Market food hall in Washington, D.C.’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The family also opened Sticx and Stonz in Georgetown last February.
