Sunrise Silver Spring Holds Protest Against School Resource Officers (SROs) & County Executive Marc Elrich’s Budget on June 6
June 6 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 amFree
SILVER SPRING, MD — On Sunday, June 6, Sunrise Silver Spring, a local chapter of Sunrise Movement is hosting a rally & march against School Resource Officers (SROs) and County Executive Marc Elrich’s budget that includes funding for SROs that he agreed to remove. The aim is to remind the Council and County Executive that students, parents, and community members are asking for racial justice and the complete removal of police from MCPS.
WHAT: Youth-led protest by Sunrise Movement against SROs and County Executive Marc Elrich’s budget.
WHEN: Sunday, June 6, 8-9 AM EST for breakfast and 9-10 AM EST for the rally and march.
WHERE: Takoma Urban Park, 7035 Carroll Ave, Takoma Park, MD 20912.
WHO: Sunrise Movement’s Silver Spring Hub, a group of youth organizers working to stop climate change and fighting for justice for all; The Montgomery County Coalition to Defend and Invest in Communities, a coalition working toward reimagining safety in Montgomery County; and other concerned community members.
VISUALS: Sunrise volunteers will have signs highlighting phrases such as “Counselors Not Cops” and “Stop Policing Our Schools.”
WHY: Montgomery County Public Schools and County Council, specifically County Executive Marc Elrich, have ignored community demands to remove armed police officers from schools. Extensive research and testimony have shown that SROs do not help students feel safe at school. Armed police in schools cause an unnecessary increase in student arrests for minor offenses, especially for Black, Brown, and disabled students. Elrich agreed to work toward removing SROs and then approved the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 budget that included funding for police in schools. This budget did not include the funding for social workers, and other mental health supports we have been advocating for. Instead of eliminating police, he proposed a new Cluster Resource Officers (CRO) model, where police will have clusters of schools to patrol. This protest is in opposition to his budget approval.
DEMANDS: We want the complete removal of armed police officers, supports for students, prioritization of youth voices, and cultural transformation regarding racial justice and school safety.
Sunrise Movement is a movement led by young people working to transform young people’s anger and frustration of the last forty years of political inaction on climate and justice into long-term grassroots power for change.
