Silver Spring Garden Club May 2019 Meeting

The Silver Spring Garden Club invites you to a talk on:

Sourcing Native Plants

Amanda McClean and Claudio Vazquez, co-owners Izel Native Plants ( will discuss how to find native plants that are truly “native” to our region. How do you know that the natives you are buying are a genotype best adapted to our area? Do you know that they were propagated from locally sourced seed and parent material, and how critical is that information? Can the commercial production of large quantities of plants be achieved without the use of chemicals and harmful pesticides? What are nativars and why should we care? is a marketplace for plants native to the contiguous US. It is the brainchild of co-founders Claudio Vazquez and Amanda McClean, two photographers with backgrounds in advertising and marketing. Both are avid gardeners, who were frustrated with the difficulties they encountered trying to find reliable native plant information and user-friendly websites for their purchases. Their database is a Mid-Atlantic resource for detailed plant information, including species characteristics, descriptions, cultivation guidelines, county level maps of recorded native range, and more.
