The 29th Season of Shark Week, produced by Discovery Communications, begins this evening at 7pm ET. For the first time, it is premiering the same week in more than 220 countries and territories around the world.

Several local businesses are getting in on the fun, starting with the Shark Week Family Fun Fest, held at the Downtown Silver Spring Fountain Plaza last Friday.

Silver Spring’s Red Rock Films contributed 2 shows to this year’s slate: Return to the Isle of Jaws, which airs Monday, July 24 at 9pm ET, and Shark Storm, which airs Thursday, July 27 at 10pm ET:

RETURN TO THE ISLE OF JAWS – Airing Monday, July 24 at 9PM ET/PT
Divers and scientists RETURN TO THE ISLE OF JAWS to unlock the mysteries of this new great white hot spot, just south of Western Australia. They make a startling discovery that causes us to re-think of everything we thought we knew about great whites. Produced by Red Rock Films.

SHARK STORM – Airing Thursday, July 27 at 10PM ET/PT
At various times of the year and in different locations around the world, sharks of many kinds gather, swarm, and spiral. Dr. Tristan Guttridge conducts a study of just what brings them together, and what’s going on in these shark ‘societies’. Produced by Red Rock Films.

Several area shops and restaurants are offering Shark Week specials through July 29, including All Set Restaurant & BarLincoln’s BBQ, Strosniders Hardware, Taylor Gourmet, Gusto Farm to Street, and Silver Spring Smiles. A PDF with the full list of the specials can be downloaded from Downtown Silver Spring.
