Tomorrow is the start of four days of fundraising by Denizens Brewing Co. to benefit five organizations supporting immigrants, women’s health and civil liberties, among other issues.
Last year over Inauguration Weekend, the brewery held a similar event to provide a community space for those who were feeling a little down and to give people a chance to do some good, according to Emily Bruno, Denizens co-founder and director of business operations.
“We wanted to do it again to recognize one year,” she said. “We’re calling it one year of resistance.”
Over the long weekend, titled “We’re Still Here: Celebrating One Year of Resistance,” 10 percent of all sales will be donated to one of five organizations. Each group will be featured for one day.
Thursday, the donations will go to Ayuda, which Bruno described as a D.C-based nonprofit that provides immigrants with legal social and language access services.
Planned Parenthood of Metro Washington, which provides reproductive health care, sex education and other information to women and men, will be Friday’s focus.
On Saturday, the donations will support ACLU of Maryland and its efforts on behalf of civil liberties, individual rights and the Constitution.
Each organization will provide literature and information about getting involved. In addition, some representatives will be present at least part of the time to speak to interested people about each group’s work.
“Ultimately, we feel that all of these topics really shouldn’t be political stuff,” Bruno said. “This is about, for us, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
“It’s not about Democrats versus Republicans,” she continued. “For us, it’s about let’s focus on some core values that we personally feel we should all share.”
The brewery will be open regular hours, Bruno said, and the company will donate a portion of all sales for the entire day. Operating hours are Monday-Thursday 4-11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday noon- 1 a.m.; and Sunday noon-10 p.m.
“Folks can come by any time,” she said. “They can pick a day if they’re more interested in supporting one organization or another, or just know that, throughout the weekend, we’ll be donating.”
