Construction is scheduled to begin next week on two new apartment buildings at the Flower Branch Apartments, 8701 and 8703 Arliss St. in Long Branch.

The buildings will replace the two lost in an explosion and fire Aug. 10, 2016, according to a press release from the management company, Kay Apartment Communities.

Seven people were killed and more than 40 injured in the blast, which was blamed on a natural gas leak.

The two buildings will include 27 units—six one-bedroom apartments, 16 two-bedroom and five three-bedroom units, the company said—and will be constructed to comply with current building and fire safety codes.

The company expects to start pre-leasing in February 2019 with occupancy in mid- to late-spring of that year.
