Library System to Offer Food for Fines Program

Have overdue library books? Reduce those fines by doing a good deed.

The library system announced it will once again offer a Foods for Fines program during the county’s Community Service Week Oct. 22-29.

Library patrons who donate food items during that week can have fines reduced by $1 for each donated item. Donations will go to Manna Food Center, which will distribute them to needy residents.

Any library customer can participate in the program, not just those with fines or hold fees. Donations should be taken to the circulation desk of any branch, including Silver Spring and Long Branch, during normal hours of operation. The White Oak branch is closed for a “refresh” project.

Manna offers a list of foods that will best serve the greatest needs, as well as those items it cannot accept.
