Adventist HealthCare Expands Patient Capacity at White Oak Medical Center

Adventist HealthCare is adding 30 beds at its White Oak Medical Center to enhance its capacity to serve patients across the region.

The Gaithersburg-based hospital system said the expansion aims to increase the facility’s ability to provide emergency and inpatient medical, surgical, and heart procedure care. The new beds are being constructed on the 8th floor of the hospital’s south tower, a space initially added a few years ago in anticipation of future growth.

According to a press release, interior construction is underway, and the new unit is planned to open by late 2024.

“The demand for services has consistently been high since White Oak Medical Center opened in August 2019,” White Oak Medical Center president Anthony Stahl said. “Most days, we are at or over capacity. Our focus is on helping patients by providing world-class care that reflects our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. We need more beds to meet the sheer need in our community, especially as the population continues to grow.”

The additional 30 beds will cater to patients requiring acute care after visiting the emergency department or undergoing surgical procedures.

Adventist HealthCare said that the expansion marks a significant step in White Oak Medical Center’s long-term plans to increase capacity and accommodate the growing service demand. Additionally, plans are underway to add a second medical office building and an ambulatory surgical center to the campus, with construction expected to commence in late 2024.

“Adventist HealthCare is committed to meeting the needs of the communities we serve in Maryland and Washington, D.C.,” said Adventist HealthCare president Terry Forde. “Adding capacity and implementing plans for future growth at White Oak Medical Center is one example of Adventist HealthCare’s intentional approach to meeting the needs of all patients who seek continuing care at our world-class non-acute and hospital-based facilities.”

The White Oak Medical Center, which opened in August 2019, replaced the former Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park.
