MCDOT Celebrates Earth Day by Making Ride On Buses Fare-Free

The county’s Department of Transportation will offer free rides on county buses, including Ride On, Ride On extRa, Ride On Flex, and Flash, on Monday, April 22, in observance of Earth Day.

The Ride On buses will waive the standard $1 fare to encourage the use of public transportation.

“In celebration of Earth Day, I encourage all residents and visitors in the County to take advantage of the free fare to try out our Ride On transportation system as an alternative to driving,” County Executive Marc Elrich said in a press release. “By choosing public transportation, you can reduce your carbon footprint, and you could read or relax and let someone else worry about the driving.”

The announcement aligns with the Maryland Transit Administration’s decision to offer free fares on MTA-operated transit services on Earth Day, while regular fares will remain in effect for Metrobus.

“Earth Day is a great opportunity to try public transportation,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “I especially encourage residents to try some of our innovative transportation options such as Flash, our Bus Rapid Transit line, and Ride On Flex, an on-demand shared ride system.”

Residents interested in Ride On Flex can download the app for free or contact the call center at (240) 301-3842.
