AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is presenting Ukraine on Film, a series of 14 recent films from Ukraine that will be screened from May 4 through May 12. The theater at 8633 Colesville Rd. is charging a special $8 per ticket to encourage attendance.
The series begins on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:10 p.m. with “Homeward,” Ukraine’s official selection for the 2020 Academy Awards. “Homeward” follows a father and son attempting to return another son’s body to the disputed Crimea territory where the boy was born.
Proceeds from “Homeward” ticket sales will go to Vostok-SOS, a non-governmental organization that works with displaced people in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. In 2014, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula.
The 2016 documentary “Mariupolis” from Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius will be screened on May 8. Kvedaravičius was killed April 2 while filming in Ukraine.
The series was curated in part by AFI’s former programming assistant Darya Levchenko.
More information about the films and the schedule, as well as buying tickets, is available online.
