Metro announced this week that it will increase weekday rail service on the Red Line beginning Tuesday, February 22.
The agency said in a press release that the rail service increase is building on recent weekday service improvements on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines to provide customers with more frequent and reliable service.
Beginning Tuesday, Red Line trains will operate every 10 minutes instead of every 12 minutes on weekdays. Trains are operating every 20 minutes on all other lines, with trains as frequently as every seven to 10 minutes at stations that are served by multiple lines throughout the system.
“We know every minute counts when you have somewhere to be, so we’re working hard to safely put as many trains into service as possible,” said General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Paul J. Wiedefeld in a statement. “We thank our customers for their continued support as we work to do our part to support the region’s recovery.”
Metro also said that since pausing the return of the 7000-series fleet to focus on root cause analysis, rail maintenance staff have concentrated on restoring more of the legacy fleet (2000-, 3000-, and 6000-series) to improve reliability.
Metro resumed regular Metrobus service on February 7, as the agency continues to recover from reduced staffing levels due to COVID-19 infections among its workers.
