Urban One’s Resort/Casino Proposal Still in Richmond Mix

Silver Spring-based Urban One, a multimedia entertainment and information company, remains in the running to build a resort/casino in Richmond, Va., according to a report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The company announced its plans in February and was one of six original bidders on an economic development project. The city has narrowed that to three, according to the paper.

Urban One’s plans for the $517 million project include a luxury hotel with 150 rooms, a 3,000-seat theater with 200 shows annually with a partnership through Live Nation, a television production studio, other facilities, attractions and restaurants.

According to the report, other proposals still in the mix include one from The Cordish Companies, a Maryland developer that already operates casinos under the Live! brand in Baltimore and other cities.

In addition, casino operator Bally’s Corp. has submitted a proposal that remains under consideration.

Under state law, the city may build one casino if it is approved by a voter referendum, which is planned for the fall.

Urban One’s brands include TV One, Radio One, Reach Media, iOne Digital or One Solution. The company claims to reach 82% of Black Americans with its outlets.
