Purple Line contractors plan to begin two additional utility relocation projects in Silver Spring on Monday, Dec. 21, weather permitting, according to the Maryland Transit Administration.
The first involves relocating both underground and overhead utilities along a stretch of 16th Street. The project will start at Lyttonsville Road, just south of Second Avenue, and go to Spring Street.
The work will be conducted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and should take about one month. Driver can expect lane closures in the southbound right-hand lane during construction.
Crews on Monday also will begin water line relocations on Bonifant Street between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street. This work will last approximately four months, depending on the weather. This work will be done from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as overnight and on weekends as needed, the MTA said.
Residents and businesses in the area will encounter temporary lane and sidewalk closures. Pedestrian, vehicular, residential and business access, as well as reduced on-street parking on both sides of the street, will be maintained, with lagging operations as needed.
In the meantime, Bonifant Street remains closed for construction between Ramsey and Georgia avenues until further notice.
In addition, work on underground utility relocations on Wayne Avenue from Fenton Street to Sligo Creek Parkway will continue as well, with occasional Saturday and overnight work expected due to weather.
