County Police Arrest, Charge Domestic Violence Suspect with Multiple Offenses

County police officers responding to a report of possible domestic violence arrested Charles Evans of Easley Street and charged him with multiple offenses.

The incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. on Nov. 12 at an apartment building in the 800 block of Easley when a witness reported seeing a woman with a black eye who wanted to use a phone, and a man who appeared to be looking for her.

“Officers responded to the address and located the female victim,” according to a press release. “The victim, who had a black eye, stated that she had been at the male’s apartment when he hit her with his fist and took her phone. While speaking to the victim, one witness alerted officers that the male suspect was attempting to flee the area carrying a suitcase.”

Third District officers began searching for the suspect, saw him carrying a suitcase in the 800 block of Bonifant Street, where he disappeared for a moment, then reappeared without the suitcase.

An officer then stopped the suspect at Bonifant and Fenton streets, where he produced a fake Maryland driver’s license; officers were able to ascertain his true identity, and that the 30-year-old Evans had two drug-related warrants for his arrest.

“Officers located Evans’ suitcase hidden in bushes on Bonifant Street.  Inside the suitcase officers evidence of criminal activity to include a loaded handgun, over four pounds of marijuana, and multiple fictitious driver’s licenses,” the release said.

Evans is prohibited from owning a gun “due to prior criminal convictions,” the department said.

Evans was charged offenses including second-degree assault, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of drugs with the intent to distribute, and use of a fictitious government identification document (driver’s license). He was also served with two drug-related warrants for his arrest from other jurisdictions.

Evans is currently being held without bond.
