Silver Spring Arts Groups to Offer Virtual Summer Camps

Several Silver Spring arts organizations will offer virtual summer art camps for youth from pre-K to 18 years old, according to an announcement from the Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District.

“Many children have been away from their classmates, family members and friends for several months,” said Silver Spring Regional Services Center Director Reemberto Rodriguez in the press release. “The arts organizations in our Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District are bringing to life summer offerings that fill an important need within our community.  Live streaming virtual camp, in-person camp, for little kids through to teens. Several of the arts organizations are offering free or reduced programming to low-income families, or children particularly hit hard by COVID-19.”

For example, Round House Theatre teaching artists will provide activities in acting, movement, design, and playmaking in small virtual groups. In addition, the organization will deliver supplies, templates and activity sheets to participants’ homes.

Several of the groups, such as Levine Music, have expanded their online classes to include free time for students to socialize virtually. Other examples include:

  • Ghandi Brigade Youth will offer a 5-week summer paid apprenticeship program. Writers, actors, filmmakers, and graphic designers age 15 to 18 living in Montgomery County are eligible to apply to create and participate in virtual community service projects to raise awareness about COVID-19 relief efforts.
  • Once it’s safe to do so, Create Arts Center will expand programming to two locations of a more traditional in-person visual arts camp with weekly sessions. The in-person programs will operate with stringent safety precautions.

More information about the summer camps, including offerings from Docs n Progress, the Maryland Youth Ballet and Akhmedova Ballet Academy is available online.
