County Council Soliciting Applications for Planning Board Vacancy

The County Council is soliciting applications for a vacancy on the Planning Board that will occur after June 2022.

Carol Rubin currently holds the seat. Rubin was appointed to finish a partial term that had been held by Natali Fani-Gonzalez, who resigned to run for County Council the new Sixth District. Rubin has announced that she will apply for a full term.

“Members serve four-year terms and are limited to two full terms. No more than three members of the Planning Board may be from the same political party, and each member must be a resident and registered voter of Montgomery County when appointed. This position can be filled by a Democrat, Republican, a voter who is unaffiliated with a party, or a voter who is a member of another party officially recognized by the Board of Elections,” according to a press release.

There are currently three Democrats, one Republican and one unaffiliated members on the board.

The board meets all day every Thursday, including many evenings, and schedules other meetings, as needed. Annual compensation is currently $30,000.

In addition to preparing the county’s general plan and making recommendations to the council many land use, community planning and other issues, the board sits as the Park Commission. As such, members approve the annual parks department operating budget and Capital Improvements Program, among other duties.

Planning Board members also serve as commissioners of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which meets monthly.

Letters of application with a résumé, political affiliation and contact information should be sent to Council President Gabe Albornoz and emailed to [email protected], or mailed to County Council Office, Stella B. Werner Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

“Letters of application and résumés are made public as part of the appointment process, and are available for public review (personal contact information is redacted). The interviews are conducted in public and will be televised,” according to the announcement.

The deadline to apply is no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 25.
