County Encouraging Residents to Shop Local on Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is today, and the County is encouraging residents to “shop small” this holiday shopping season.

“First observed in the United States on November 27, 2010, Small Business Saturday is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively,” according to Wikipedia. “By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.”

County residents and local businesses are encouraged to use the hashtag #KeepingMoneyinMontgomery on social media, and share pictures and comments about places in the County where they are shopping.

“Montgomery County is home to some of the most significant larger businesses in Maryland and the Washington region, but we also have small businesses that are the fabric of the economic community and create the identity and energy of neighborhoods throughout the County,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in a press release. “As people return to safely shopping in person, I encourage them to shop local throughout the holiday season. Smaller shops often have unique products that can make this year’s shopping list special and every small business owner will appreciate the opportunity to meet old customers and make new ones.”

Elrich will be visiting several businesses within the County today, including:
