A portion of Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring will be temporarily closed as of 5 p.m. June 12 to allow restaurants additional space to provide customers outdoor dining, according to a press release.
The right lanes of Georgia will be shut down between Silver Spring and Thayer avenues in a pilot project that will run through at least June 21.
The pilot, known as Streetdine, is the result of a collaboration between the State Highway Administration, the Silver Spring Urban District, County Council Vice President Tom Hucker (D-District 5) and local business owners.
“I encourage residents to come out, patronize these local businesses and enjoy the opportunity to eat outside in a shared space,” Hucker said in the release.
“After consulting with local retailers and restaurants, this is a pilot project that responds to what works in this area of Silver Spring,” added Reemberto Rodriguez, director of the Silver Spring Regional Center. “We are looking at other locations throughout downtown as well to help all local businesses come back strong.”
As part of the county’s COVID-19 reopening process, restaurants and bars were allowed to offer temporary outdoor service as of June 1, provided establishments registered and followed the county’s listed conditions for providing the service.
