After the holiday, there’s and rescue animal adoption event Sunday in Takoma Park as well as a piano concert, and Cup Scout Pack 23 begins a Toys for Tots drive in Silver Spring. Levine Music hosts a blues jam on Wednesday, followed by a comedy show Thursday at Busboys and Poets. And please remember to shop small this Saturday at your favorite local stores.

The annual county Thanksgiving parade on Saturday highlights the week leading up to the holiday. The night before, join the D.C. Blues Society at the 4th Friday happy hour at the American Legion, which hosts a comedy show the next night. AstroLab Brewing will sponsor a holiday craft market on Sunday. On Monday, residents interested in pedestrian safety in Silver Spring are invited to attend a briefing on the issue. The final Crossroads farmers market of the season on Wednesday will include holiday-themed music and fun, with lunch featuring Takoma Park Mayor Kate Stewart.

County Seeks Volunteers to Participate in Thanksgiving Parade

The county is looking for volunteers to assist with various aspects of the annual Thanksgiving parade this Saturday, Nov. 23. Volunteers must be at least 13 or older and plan to meet at the civic building, then expect to remain at the parade site from 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Opportunities include dressing up in costumes as elves or pilgrims to ride on floats, as penguins or reindeer to walk in the parade, to walk along and handle balloons and other inflatables, or act as unit leaders.

Live Garra Theatre presents opening night of Sartre’s “No Exit” on Friday, while comedian Irene Tu performs the same night at Montgomery College in the Cultural Arts Center. Friends of the Library will be collecting used books on Saturday at the Silver Spring Library. On Sunday, Azalea City Recordings plans a record release party featuring songs from local musicians. Area singers will have two chances to participate in community sings this week, one on Wednesday and one Thursday evening.

The 10th annual Community Stories film festival from Docs in Progress is this week, as is the annual Community Bridges Girl Legacy gala. Other highlights include a fundraiser for veterans at UP studios, several recitals at Levine Music, a census workshop, and an online chat with the county executive.

Bud Skeleton fans will have two chances to hear the band this week, at the American Legion (with friends) tomorrow night and then at the Hell’s Bottom VFW post in Takoma Park next Friday night. The Legion will also host a garage rock night on Saturday. There are also several other types of musical performances in the area throughout the week. A highlight coming up—the initial screening of the latest work from Gandhi Brigade Youth Media at Montgomery College Tuesday evening.

Halloween is Thursday, one week from today, and there are numerous event planned over the next week to celebrate (including the annual Zombie Walk). If your favorite venue isn’t listed, check directly with them. In the meantime, there’s an adoption event with the Humane Rescue Alliance at the Go Brent offices on Saturday, which is also Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Manna Food Center will sponsor a rescued food cooking contest at Sunday’s Farmers Market in Silver Spring, and the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood will hold a beer crawl at the Silver Spring breweries. There is no shortage of opportunities for civic or charitable involvement this week. The Victim’s Rights Foundation and Passion4Learning are both holding gala celebrations, while there are fundraisers planned for WOWD Radio and Shepherd’s Table and Takoma Park Library’s fall sale. On the civic side, there are meetings about saving trees in downtown Silver Spring, PEPCO’s ongoing work, and the Countywide Pedestrian Master Plan.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival with a tribute show at Montgomery College’s Cultural Arts Center on Saturday night. The same night, The Loose Ends host four other local bands at the American Legion hall. Both the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board and the Urban District Advisory Board meet this week, while the Friends of Sligo Creek hold a presentation on the stream’s water quality Tuesday evening.
