Plenty of local bands will be playing this weekend, with groups at the American Legion and Takoma VFW on Friday night, and garage rock Saturday night at the Legion. Also on Saturday, explore the music of Led Zeppelin with a band at Levine Music, while Potter Violins hosts fiddler Mari Black. On Sunday, the Silver Spring Library hosts a discussion on the history of lynching in the county, and on Monday, the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board will get a update on local construction and transit proposals.

New Theater Company Announced in Takoma Park

Two Takoma Park residents have launched a new nonprofit theater group and announced the inaugural production of the company. Co-directors Steve Quintilian and Julie Lloyd started Encore Theater Company and will produce “Next to Normal,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical as the group’s premier production.

AstroLab Brewing will host its first art show Friday night, while the D.C  Blues Society has its monthly happy hour concert at the American Legion. Saturday, Scrum Con 2020 for role-playing and war game fans comes to the Silver Spring Civic Building. Opportunities for civic engagement include a WMATA town hall on Monday to discuss budget and proposed route changes, a workshop on proposed RideOn route changes on Tuesday, and a discussion of budgets and other issues affecting public parking in Silver Spring on Wednesday.

Strosniders Silver Spring Store Sold to Local Hardware Group

Strosniders Hardware’s Silver Spring store has been sold to A Few Cool Hardware Stores, according to an announcement circulated to customers by the company. AFCHS is another locally based member of the Ace Hardware cooperative that operates a dozen other hardware stores in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area, including the Old Takoma Ace Hardware at 7001 Carroll Ave.

Tuskegee Airman Charles McGee Brings Stories, Advice to Silver Spring

The last two months have been a whirlwind for retired Army Brig. Gen. Charles E. McGee of Bethesda, who turned 100 in December, participated in the coin toss at Super Bowl LIV in Miami, received an official promotion to general and was honored by President Donald Trump—along with his great-grandson Iain Lanphier—during the State of the Union address.
