Small Things Matter Distributes Hundreds of Free Meals at Blair High School

Silver Spring-based nonprofit Small Things Matter, created by Montgomery Blair High School student Lana Anderson, distributed 600 Indian curry meals free of charge to anyone that visited the school on Monday. The Guru Gobind Singh Foundation – Sikh Spiritual Center provided the meals.

In a January 2018 interview, STM founder Lana Anderson described Small Things Matter as an organization that “engages people of all ages to use their talents to help others in need. We do a variety of activities including crafting items for hospitals, hosting birthday parties to craft items and donate them to the charity of choice, and raising awareness for various organizations and groups by producing custom buttons. In the past few months, we have made over 300 monster stuffies, hosted one charity birthday party, and made over 100 buttons for the National Library of Medicine at the NIH.”

According to their website, STM’s Kokua Foods Program “provides over 1000 food-insecure families in Maryland with fresh produce and grocery, chicken, casseroles, non-perishable, and household goods on a monthly basis through partnerships with Wegmans, Imperfect Foods, TPSS Co-op, Silver Spring Cares, Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County Food Council, Guru Gobind Singh Foundation, Amerigroup, and volunteers in Takoma Park and Rockville.”

Earlier this year, STM partnered with Silver Spring Cares to provide meals from local restaurants to residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To fund the effort and help to support the restaurants’ employees, SSC launched a Community Connection GoFundMe page, according to Heather Foley, Silver Spring Cares’ executive director.
