Takoma Park Welcomes Red Hound Pizza After Busy Soft Opening

Red Hound Pizza has officially opened after a successful soft launch last week.

The restaurant is the second to open in Takoma Park this month, following San Pancho from Cielo Rojo owners Carolina McCandless and David Perez, which quickly sold out of burritos during its opening weekend.

Owned by partners Andrea Alvarez and Charbel Abrache, Red Hound Pizza offers square pizzas created using the partners’ favorite aspects of Roman and Sicilian pizza-making with locally sourced ingredients, including freshly milled flour from local and regenerative sources.

Abrache is the former head pastry chef at D.C. favorite Seylou Bakery, where he led his team in developing recipes using whole-grain flour and alternative grains and created the popular pizza program.

According to Laura Barclay of Main Street Takoma, the menu features a seasonal rotation of pizza toppings, focaccia sandwiches (coming soon), salads, and various desserts, including soft-serve ice cream. Red Hound Pizza offers pizza by the slice and whole pizzas to encourage sampling, and customers can enjoy their pizzas in the outdoor dining area or take them to go.

Beer and wine will be available soon, Barclay said.

“The crust is a revelation – fluffy, light, and reminiscent of focaccia, yet boasting a satisfying crispiness,” wrote DC Tourist. “This foundation is then topped with an ever-changing array of seasonal ingredients, sourced from local farms. From classic Margherita to bold flavor combinations like roasted shishito peppers, corn, and pancetta, there’s something to tantalize every palate.”

“The pizza gods must have heard my prayers because Takoma Park now boasts pizza that is not only made with whole wheat crusts, but which is sold by the slice!” local musician Jennifer Cutting wrote on Facebook. “As someone who tries hard to follow a lower-carb diet and eat whole grains whenever possible, I’m over the moon with Red Hound’s robust crust. Made with whole wheat and whole spelt sourced from local mills, it’s crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, with enough character and heft to stand up to its generous cargo of toppings.”

Red Hound Pizza is located at 7050 Carroll Ave. in Takoma Park, in the former home of Main Street Pearl. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
