Takoma Red Line Station to Reopen Early with Upgraded Amenities

The Takoma station on Metro’s Red Line will reopen to customers at the start of rail service on Friday morning, two days ahead of schedule.

Since June 1, the Takoma station and the Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, and Silver Spring stations have been closed to accommodate Purple Line construction and for Metro maintenance and repairs.

Metro said in a press release issued Wednesday that crews have completed reconstructing an interlocking area between Fort Totten and Takoma. The area had been experiencing drainage issues, so crews removed the existing track, addressed the problem, rebuilt the track bed, and replaced the ballast and ties holding the track in place.

Takoma station upgrades include brighter and more efficient platform edge lighting, new communication cabling, improved rail ties for better ride quality, removal of overgrown vegetation along the track area, new signage, paint, sidewalk repairs, and new digital passenger information displays showing real-time train arrivals and other service information.

Construction on the Red Line from Glenmont to Takoma will continue through August 31 due to work by the Maryland Transit Administration on the Purple Line light rail connection to the Red Line at Silver Spring and other Metro track work. Shuttle buses will replace train service, and shuttles will continue to serve Takoma for customers needing access to the station from the north.
