FedEx Office is now open at its new location at 8501 Georgia Ave., on the corner of Wayne and Georgia avenues in the space formerly occupied by Office Depot.

FedEx Office is a FedEx subsidiary that provides a retail outlet for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground shipping, along with printing (including photos), copying and binding services, shipping and packing supplies, computer access and Wi-Fi. Unlike The UPS Store (its primary competitor), all FedEx Office stores are corporate-owned.

The former location on East-West Highway closed earlier this week in anticipation of the move.

The East-West Highway location is part of a parcel slated for redevelopment. The preliminary plan for Metro Plaza covers 1.44 acres on the northwest quadrant of Colesville Road and East-West Highway.

The proposal calls for 522 multi-family residential units (a mix of apartments and condominiums in two towers) and about 14,200 square feet of ground-level retail with two or more stores.

The 21-story project backs up to the planned Purple Line tracks and a power substation. Construction is not expected to start until after completion of that work.
