GoFundMe ranks Silver Spring as the third most generous city since the crowdfunding website launched in 2010.
Silver Spring has consistently ranked as one of the most generous cities on the GoFundMe platform for its support of individuals, causes, and organizations, ranking as the third most generous city in multiple years.
More than 58,000 Silver Spring residents have donated nearly $6 million to GoFundMe campaigns, with total donations on the site surpassing $40 billion globally over the last 15 years.
Recent GoFundMe campaigns in Silver Spring include over $4,600 raised for a Montgomery Blair High School journalism student attending The New York Times Summer Academy, more than $15,600 for the family of a man who died in a motorcycle accident, over $6,000 for the family of a woman killed during a carjacking in Sterling, Virginia, and over $8,700 to support Errters Market, which has faced multiple armed robberies.
According to GoFundMe spokesperson Madeline Purdue, Maryland’s most frequently supported categories were medical, memorial, and emergency causes, followed by education, family, and animals.
Maryland residents also raised $11 million for nonprofits on GoFundMe, with more than $11 million raised since 2010 for organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Sarcoma Foundation of America, and LifeStraw Safe Water Fund.
The most generous Maryland resident donated more than 700 times to help others.
“So grateful to live in and represent such a generous community!”, Maryland Delegate Lorig Charkoudian said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) last Friday.
