Montgomery County Police have announced the addition of weekend patrols in downtown Silver Spring.
Extra officers will be present around Veterans Plaza, Ellsworth Drive, and Fenton Street on Friday and Saturday nights to “ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors,” 3rd District Commander Jason Cokinos said last week on X (formerly Twitter).
The new patrols, which started last weekend, are in addition to the enhanced parking garage patrols that MCPD implemented in April.

Montgomery County Police previously reported a 7.6 percent decrease in crime in downtown Silver Spring over the past year while noting a rise in auto-related thefts requiring continued enforcement efforts.
In April, Cokinos noted that crime in the Central Business District has continued to decline into the first quarter of 2025, attributed to enhanced security in downtown parking garages, the Drone as First Responder program that was recently expanded to Bethesda, and new laws affecting late-night business hours.
Additionally, MCPD has made positive progress in combating retail theft.
“We are beginning to see positive returns on our retail theft efforts,” Cokinos said last month.
