Montgomery Planning staff working on the Silver Spring Downtown and Adjacent Communities Plan are scheduled to brief the Planning Board on the project at a meeting this morning.
The presentation will include an overview of existing conditions data gathering and analysis, providing highlights and major takeaways since the project began seven months ago, according to the staff report.
The study as originally intended is an update to the 2000 Silver Spring Central Business District Plan. However, the board in June directed the staff to include nearby neighborhoods in the project.
The plan boundary thus was expanded to include the neighborhoods surrounding downtown that are within a ten-minute walk from the future Silver Spring Library Purple Line Station, extending into Woodside, Woodside Park and East Silver Spring.
The presentation will cover, among other areas:
- Demographics
- An analysis of existing development and zoning
- An analysis of parks and public spaces
- An environmental analysis
- Data on existing community resources, including a look at schools, and
- “A study of the current transit networks, road networks, traffic conditions, pedestrian and bike infrastructure, parking facilities and micromobility activities within the plan area,” according to the staff report.
At later dates, the board will hear additional “existing conditions” presentations on retail and office market conditions from an outside consultant, and a staff report on missing middle housing.
The board’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The briefing is the last item of the morning before a 12:15 p.m. lunch break. Interested stakeholders can watch the presentation online.
