Heavy rainfall, flooding and storm damage hit the Silver Spring area over the last 24 hours, with more forecasted to come later today.

According to the National Weather Service, over 4 inches of rain fell between yesterday afternoon and this morning. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 2PM today, and another 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible.

Several road closings and damage reports have come in. Earlier this morning, Wayne Avenue near Whole Foods was shut down because of a downed telephone pole. Northwest Branch at Route 29 is close to cresting and covering the road. Sligo Creek Park is closed and the Sligo Creek is very high. A downed tree at Thayer and Hartford closed the intersection for several hours overnight. One of the last remaining trees in the Oak Grove in the Silver Spring Intermediate Park was also lost due to the flood damage.

Pepco’s Power Outage Map is showing some power outages in the area.
