The parking lot of the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op now features a box containing free products for women experiencing “period poverty” as well as other personal wellness products, according to a post on the co-op’s website.
Period poverty refers to those having inadequate access to menstrual hygiene tools and education, including but not limited to sanitary products, washing facilities and waste management.
The pink box on the parking lot is filled with sanitary napkins, tampons, hand sanitizer and similar items. The box is from Twynbox, a community organization launched in August of this year by Marley Vollmerhausen and Noura Coulibaly in the Silver Spring area to assist the homeless and those in poverty.
The two told the co-op they started the organization as a way to help others and were inspired by the little free libraries that have sprung up in the area.
