The Takoma Park Police Department recorded 20 formal complaints against either the department or its employees in 2020, according to a press release.
That number represents a 45% increase from nine complaints in 2019.
Complaints were filed against 13 sworn officers, some of whom were involved in more than one complaint. Five civilian employees were the subject of a complaint, some of whom were involved in more than one complaint, the department said as part of its annual Internal Affairs Complaint Investigations report.
“Twelve of the 20 complaints resulted in sustained findings of improper conduct, and disciplinary measures were warranted and taken. Eight complaints were determined to be unfounded,” the release said.
Two of the complaints resulted in written reprimands and one led to a loss of pay. In one case, the complainant retired during the investigation, and in another, one individual resigned in lieu of termination.
Fives cases led to other forms of discipline, the department said, and two cases are pending.
The number of complaints represent 0.06% of the 12,081 contacts officers had with the public in 2020.
