Red-Light Cameras Arrive in Takoma Park: Dates, Locations, and Fines

Takoma Park will install red-light cameras at seven intersections in the city over the next three weeks to “deter dangerous driving behavior, improve compliance with traffic signals, and ultimately save lives,” according to police spokesperson Cathy Plevy.

Starting Monday, September 23rd, red-light cameras will be installed at the following intersections:

  • Eastbound Philadelphia Avenue at Piney Branch Road;
  • Northbound Piney Branch Road at Philadelphia Avenue; and
  • Southbound Piney Branch Road at Philadelphia Avenue.

On September 30th, cameras will be installed at the following intersections:

  • Southbound New Hampshire Avenue at Glenside Drive; and
  • Northbound New Hampshire Avenue at Erskine Street.

On October 7th, cameras will be installed at the following intersections:

  • Northbound New Hampshire Avenue at Holton Lane; and
  • Southbound New Hampshire Avenue at Ethan Allen Avenue.

Once the cameras are installed at the intersections, a 30-day warning period kicks off, during which no citations will be issued. Full enforcement, including the issuance of citations, will commence after each intersection’s 30-day warning grace period.

The fine for an automated red-light violation is $75, but it can increase to $100 if court-imposed costs are added when contesting citations. As these are civil violations, police will not inform vehicle insurance providers about the citations, and no points will be added to a driver’s license.

Citations can be paid online, in person, or by mail, with specific payment instructions in the violation notice.

“This program is part of a broader effort to improve traffic safety and encourage compliance with traffic laws,” Plevy said. “We urge drivers to remain vigilant and obey all traffic signals to avoid violations and, more importantly, prevent accidents.”

A dedicated Red-Light Camera Enforcement Program website will be available soon.
