Most Major Crimes Down in Takoma Park During First Quarter 2022

Takoma Park saw a decrease in several Part 1 (major) crimes in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 2021, but two other types increased, according to a quarterly report from the Takoma Park Police Department.

The decreases were in homicides (from 3 down to 1, or a 66.67% decrease), rape (also from 3 to 1), robbery (14 to 8, 42.86%), auto theft (22 down to 15, 31.82%) and thefts from autos (96 vs. 55, 42.71%).

However, the number of assaults that took place rose from four in Q1 2021 to 23, an increase of 475%. Larceny also rose, though not as much, from 60 to 74, or 23.33). The number of burglaries in the city was the same, 16 in both years.

There were a total of 193 Part 1 crimes in Q1 2022, down from 219 in the prior year’s first quarter. Those crimes in Ward 3 increased by 21.88% while Ward 4 experienced an increase of 7.69%.

While Part 1 crimes in Ward 6 were down by 3.37% quarter over quarter, the ward still accounted for about 45% of all Part 1 crimes in the city during the first quarter of 2022.
