Takoma Park Police Seeking Applicants for Community Police Academy

Correction: Applicants must be 16 years old to apply for the program.

The Takoma Park Police Department is looking for residents interested in applying for the Community Police Academy, according to a community advisory.

The academy is limited to 25 people who would like to learn more about topics including patrol, traffic enforcement, use of force, criminal investigations, canine, firearms, crisis negotiation and more.

The course is a 14-week-long program of one class a week on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and will include equipment demonstrations, practical scenarios, field trips and ride-alongs with patrol officers.

“The Takoma Park Police Department believes that educating the community will result in gaining their understanding and support,” the advisory reads. “Through [the] implementation of the Community Police Academy, the community will gain new insight into how law enforcement officers perform their duties.”

The academy is free and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and the department asks that participants be willing to commit to the full 14 weeks. Masks will be required.

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older, and live or work in Takoma Park. The applicants may not have any serious misdemeanor or any felony offenses. Applications for the Community Police Academy are available at the Takoma Park Police Department located at 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, 20912.  It is also available online.

The deadline for applying is Friday, Dec. 17. Questions can be directed to Cathy Plevy, public information officer, at 301.891.7142 or [email protected].
