Takoma Park Businesses to Celebrate National Bubble Tea Day

Three businesses in Takoma Park will celebrate National Bubble Tea Day on Friday, April 30, according to an email from Main Street Takoma.

$1 from every bubble tea or bubble tea toy purchased at Main Street Pearl, Kin Da, or Fair Day’s Play on Friday, April 30 will be donated to Asian American Leadership Empowerment and Development (AALEAD) APA Youth Programs.

According to AALEAD’s website, the Washington, D.C. nonprofit’s mission “is to support low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth with educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities through after school, summer, and mentoring programs.”

AALEAD was founded in 1998 by Ms. Sandy Dang to initially serve the large Vietnamese refugee population in the District. Ms. Dang witnessed the same needs and types of challenges she faced as a recent refugee to the United States just a few years back. Her vision was to create and grow a community organization that belonged to the community. The rest is history!

National Bubble Tea Day was added to the calendar in 2018 as a marketing strategy by New York City-based Kung Fu Tea, according to the event & holiday website National Today. Kung Fu Tea has several area locations, including one at Ellsworth Place in downtown Silver Spring, which opened in 2016.
