County to Extend Shared Streets Program into the Spring

The county will extend the Shared Streets program until at least March, officials announced yesterday. The program was started during the pandemic to allow residents and businesses to use public spaces for in-street activities such as biking, walking, outdoor dining and other business activity.

State Commits to Funding Redesign of Georgia Avenue Corridor

The Maryland Department of Transportation has committed $1.6 million to finish redesigning the Georgia Avenue corridor in Montgomery Hills and Forest Glen, according to a press release distributed by state Del. Jared Solomon (D-District 18). The State Highway Administration received federal approval in September 2019 to redesign the stretch of Georgia from 16th Street to Forest Glen Avenue.

Driver Charged With Hit-and-Run, Handgun Possession, Other Offenses

Officers with the county’s Holiday Alcohol Task Force arrested a hit-and-run driver Dec. 30 and charged him with several offenses, including possession of a loaded handgun. Humberto Guerra, age 26, of Bronzegate Place in Silver Spring was identified as the driver of a white Nissan Versa that hit an unoccupied, parked vehicle around Carroll Avenue and Osage Street in the Langley Park area.

Hit-and-Run Suspect Arrested; Handgun Found in Jacket

Officers from the Montgomery County Police Department’s 3rd District have arrested and charged Mario J Rios, age 21, of Schrider Street in Silver Spring, with criminal offenses including possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun by a prohibited person due to prior criminal convictions, and second-degree assault for assaulting a 3rd District officer, according to an MCPD press release.
