Plenty of local bands will be playing this weekend, with groups at the American Legion and Takoma VFW on Friday night, and garage rock Saturday night at the Legion. Also on Saturday, explore the music of Led Zeppelin with a band at Levine Music, while Potter Violins hosts fiddler Mari Black. On Sunday, the Silver Spring Library hosts a discussion on the history of lynching in the county, and on Monday, the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board will get a update on local construction and transit proposals.
The Eleanor, a bowling lounge, bar and grille, will open its second location at 931 Ellsworth Dr. on Monday, Feb. 24, company officials said at a preview event last night. Adam Stein, the managing partner and face of the ownership team, said he first got the idea for “a bowling alley that had elevated food and beverage offerings” when he was a student at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Kicking off the last week of January is the Friday blues happy hour at the American Legion, which will then host comedy on Saturday. MoComCon returns for the fourth year at the Silver Spring Library on Saturday. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday is Monday, with a day of service event at the civic building and other opportunities to serve around the area. That evening, there’s a bluegrass jam at the Takoma Park VFW. The county’s transportation department is holding a meeting Tuesday night to discuss plans to improve the Fenton Village experience for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The owner of a vape and hookah lounge in Montgomery Hills has applied for a liquor license and indicated her intent to convert the space into a sports bar, according to documents filed with the county Board of License Commissioners. If granted, beer, wine and liquor could be sold on premises only from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Sunday, and Friday and Saturday to 3 a.m.
Bud Skeleton fans will have two chances to hear the band this week, at the American Legion (with friends) tomorrow night and then at the Hell’s Bottom VFW post in Takoma Park next Friday night. The Legion will also host a garage rock night on Saturday. There are also several other types of musical performances in the area throughout the week.
