Red Rock Films Wins Emmy Award for “Secrets of the Whales”

The Disney+ / National Geographic series “Secrets of the Whales“, produced by Silver Spring-based Red Rock Films, has been awarded the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

The series was nominated for three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Cinematography For A Nonfiction Program, and Outstanding Narrator—Sigourney Weaver.

“As one of the biggest projects that Red Rock Films has taken on to date, it took a dedicated and passionate team to bring this series to life,” Brian Armstrong, President and Founder of Red Rock Films, said in a statement. “From the divers and scientists to the camera crew, editors and production coordinators, we want to thank all the tremendous talent that contributed to the special. And a big thank you to the Television Academy, Brian Skerry, James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver!”

According to Red Rock Films, “Secrets of the Whales”, which is directed by James Cameron and narrated by Sigourney Weaver, “plunges viewers deep within the epicenter of whale culture to experience the extraordinary communication skills and intricate social structures of five different whale species: orcas, humpbacks, belugas, narwhals and sperm whales. With Academy Award®-winning filmmaker and conservationist James Cameron, and featuring the skill of acclaimed National Geographic Explorer and Photographer Brian Skerry, the four-part special-event series unveils new science and technology to spotlight whales as they make lifelong friendships, teach clan heritage and traditions to their young, and grieve deeply for the loss of loved ones. Produced over three years in 24 global locations, throughout this epic journey, we learn that whales are far more complex and more like us than ever imagined.”

In addition to the Emmy Award win, Red Rock Films recently announced a new, 8,000 square foot headquarters in Silver Spring, the appointment of a new Vice President of Creative Content, and recent major projects, including the 8-part series “Penguin Town” on Netflix, “Shark Attack Files” and “World Biggest Bull Shark” on National Geographic as part of “SharkFest” and “MotherSharker” as part of Discovery’s “Shark Week.”
