The Unofficial Hand Lettering Society of Silver Spring has launched a new song lyrics greeting card project, partnering with local coffee shop & roaster Bump ‘n Grind.
“(I’m) so excited for folks to get to see & share these in person,” said SSLetters co-founder Christy Batta in an email received by the Source. “Thanks so much to Bump ‘n Grind for coming to us with this cool idea and all the letterers that submitted artwork for consideration!”
The greeting cards, which feature artwork from SSLetters members Nancy Kohut, Meiling Liu, and Boosaba Tantisunthorn, are in stock now at Bump ‘n Grind’s storefront at 1200 East-West Highway.
According to their website, SSLetters “was started as a fun venture by Christy Batta, a graphic designer for Christy Batta Design, a Silver Spring-based design firm that does branding for non-profits; and Amina Ahmad, owner, and maker of small-batch candle company Handmade Habitat. Christy did freelance design work for Amina, designing her business logo, which she partially hand-lettered. We got started talking about how awesome hand-lettering is and decided, why not meet once a month around Silver Spring to letter in company, and invite anyone else who wants to come! Thus, the Society was born. We outgrew Zed’s Cafe in Silver Spring pretty fast, and since then have been meeting in various restaurants and hot spots around Silver Spring.”
SSLetters has also launched a Holiday Gift Guide, featuring products from local artisans such as Handmade Habitat, Shop Analog, and others: “Want to shop local and shop hand-lettered? Check out these beautiful and inspiring gifts made by DMV letterers to add warmth and creativity to your holiday gifts!”
