About 50 volunteers joined Friends of Sligo Creek to mark Earth Day by sweeping the creek Sunday afternoon.

According to Chris Richardson, who helped organize the event, the group picked up 38 large bags of trash and eight large bags of recyclables from the section between Piney Branch Road and Wayne Avenue.

FOSC supplied the bags and work gloves to the volunteers, which included Daisy Troop 34024 and Boy Scout Pack 275, Richardson said.

In addition, he said, one volunteer spotted small fish, an indicator of the stream’s health.

Another group cleared the section between Wayne Avenue and Colesville Road Saturday afternoon, just one of a number of events that took place around the area over the Earth Day weekend.
