High winds taking down trees, wires around the area

Today’s continuing high winds are taking down area trees and, in some cases, power lines, causing damage and disrupting traffic.

Two trees are down in North Four Corners, one partially blocking Edgewood Drive between Woodridge and Southward avenues after a service cut away a portion of the downed tree.

A large fraction of another tree is mostly blocking Eastwood Avenue between Woodridge and Northwood avenues. Both are major cut-through streets, especially at rush hour.

In addition, there are reports of trees down in the 9000 block of Alton Parkway, partially blocking the road and taking down power lines; another fallen across Highland Drive, impeding access to the intersection of Highland and Woodland Drive east of Georgia Avenue.

Another report told of a tree falling on a house on Red Oak Drive near Crosby Drive, though the Source has not heard any reports of injuries.

County police are urging residents NOT to call 911 to report wires down unless there is an emergency (fire, personal injury, etc.). Downed wires (as well as any power outages) should be reported to Pepco at 877.737.2662.
